If the current presidential election polls in the United States are to be believed as an accurate reflection of the “real” levels of support for Joe Biden and Donald Trump then one could reasonably conclude that Biden is on course to be the next resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC. Biden is viewed as being more capable in the handling of the present Covid-19 pandemic, for example, if the gauge of projected public sentiment is anywhere near correct. Supreme Court nominations and uniting the country are two other issues on which Biden apparently enjoys an advantage over Trump according to the pollsters.
Yet do the poll findings actually compute with reality? Doubtless there are significant numbers of people who could be characterised as subscribing to the published findings, but are they as universally in sync with what the pollsters conclude? Is November's election result simply rubber stamping what the pollsters have already decided?
It all feels remarkably reminiscent of 2016, with Hillary Clinton going through the motions, apparently content in the knowledge that her coronation was a foregone conclusion.
Trump, though, emerged victorious, seemingly coming from nowhere, confounding all the liberal pundits (most of whom went into mourning at the unthinkable having happened).
