Joe Gomez learning the hard way as astonishing Liverpool fact emerges
If it's surprising to consider Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez celebrated only his 23rd birthday on Saturday, then prepare to be blown away by this.
The defender was aged 20 when he last lost a Premier League game.
Sure, there have been the mitigating circumstances of a number of serious injuries and the form of others that has at times left him primarily on the bench. Plus there is the fact Liverpool, under Jurgen Klopp, have been almost unbeatable in the top flight over the past two years.
But Gomez's contribution is clear given his run of 40 unbeaten top-flight appearances - 30 of which have been as a starter - since the 1-0 loss at Swansea City in January 2018 has seen Liverpool concede only 11 goals.
It's why Klopp has kept faith in the player who suffered a serious knee ligament injury just days after the new Reds boss was unveiled in October 2015.
Gomez's long road back was not without bumps - not least the fractured leg that so hampered the previous campaign at a time when he appeared to have won the battle to be Virgil van Dijk's centre-back partner - but he was given the seal of approval when named ahead of Joel Matip for the first two games of this season.
