US election 2020: The one thing that will spell Joe Biden's political end
Although Biden remains in a competitive race with Donald Trump, and may well do so until Election Day, his support isn’t growing. And, tellingly, almost all of the issues that matter most to voters are trending in President Trump’s favour. Surprisingly, perhaps, to a non-American audience, the coronavirus crisis is not the most pressing issue for Americans. That’s good news for Trump, as his ratings on handling the crisis are fair to poor.
More Americans are concerned about the economy and keeping their current, or getting a new, job. They don’t especially blame Trump for the lockdown-induced economic contraction, and they think he’ll do a better job of righting the economic ship than Biden. It’s very significant that education now ties the pandemic as the second most important issue to voters. Today, in the American context, “education” is synonymous with school closings. It’s become such an important issue to so many people that there’s now a clear divide in American politics on the issue. Education is an issue that normally helps Democrats, but not this year. Biden and the Democrat-supporting teacher’s unions are firmly against opening schools before, one presumes, a vaccine is available. In striking contrast, Trump, the Republicans, most public health experts, and, according to our poll, a majority of voters and parents very much want American schoolchildren back in the classroom as soon as possible.
